Photo credit: Larry Lopez Junior Kyle Rowley values the importance of contributing to good causes, but his recent participation in a campus fundraiser to support cancer research comes with an extra incentive. “As someone who has had family who has had cancer, whenever you’re taking part in an event that’s raising awareness, raising money, it always feels like you’re a part of the fight, that you’re supporting them and their fight,” said Rowley, a junior majoring in microbiology and immunology and biochemistry and molecular biology. “It always feels good, and it’s doing good.”

It also will address issues presented by participants. Over the past few months, the University of Miami has taken a hard look at how it can truly serve as an exemplary institution, accelerating its work on diversity, equity, and inclusion as it works to help heal the pain in our communities caused by racism and inequality. The University has committed this academic year to engaging boldly in addressing pressing social issues, including racial justice.

Jones Jr. 02-04-2021 The two have led their respective units, Student Affairs and the Office of the General Counsel, to new heights during their long years of service to the University. Two longtime University of Miami leaders renowned in their fields, Patricia A. Whitely and Aileen Ugalde, started at the University of Miami during different eras the former in the 1980s, when new computer technologies emerged and something called MTV reshaped pop culture, and the latter in the 1990s, the decade that saw the Soviet Union fall and the advent of the internet. 

2020 Year in Review: UM community reflects on its challenges amid resiliency

The University of Miami endured a tumultuous year of surprises and hurdles: from responding to the coronavirus pandemic to implementing new health practices, to adapting to society’s new normal. The university enrolls more than 17,000 students and employs more than 16,000 people across three campuses: the Coral Gables Campus, the Medical Campus in downtown Miami, and the Marine Campus on Virginia Key. Like many universities, UM was tasked with adapting to remote and hybrid learning environments while also striving to mitigate the spread of the virus on its campuses. The UM community, filled with students, professors, faculty and administrators, weighed in to express their perspective on the overview of the year.
