WATERTOWN — The Board of Education has selected Larry C. Schmiegel, a high school principal in Florida who is a Central New York native, as the next superintendent of schools.
WATERTOWN City schools are closed today after snow accumulation overnight. Superintendent Patricia LaBarr first called a two-hour delay, but changed that to a full cancelation.

“That’s a lot of school to miss,” LaBarr said.
In one family, a child missed 71 days of school, according to the police.
LaBarr said the district is hybrid, so most kids attend two days in school and three days online. Some families have also chosen to have their kids be fully remote.

WATERTOWN, N.Y. (WWNY) - Citing a âsignificant increaseâ in COVID-19 cases, the Watertown City School District will go to remote-only instruction for the rest of January.
Seven new cases were reported by school district officials Friday.
In a statement late Friday afternoon, school superintendent Patricia LaBarr writes âthe District has made the very difficult decision to transition to our remote learning planâ starting Monday through Friday, January 29.
âThe decision to close school was not made lightly.
