Governor Sununu’s spokesperson recently shared the governor’s opinion that the pause of the J&J vaccine “was an unnecessary delay that has shaken consumer confidence in a safe and proven vaccine.” Seriously? First, keep in mind that it was a CDC and FDA recommendation, not a requirement, so the governor could have announced at the time that he was rejecting their advice, and that New Hampshire would continue to hold vaccination clinics for the J&J vaccine.
Second, the pause enabled federal regulators to determine that the odds of an adverse event were about 1 in 500,000. Suppose they had found the odds were 1 in 50,000 or 1 in 5,000.
