The Black Urban Farmers Association received a $5,000 grant last month to continue with their produce growth and develop new projects the association needs.
BUFA started in 2015 with 12 members. They were plot holders and gardened their own food at Boggs Tract Community Farm, said Reatha Hardy-Jordan, BUFA co-founder. “Then (we) had a desire to grow food for our community,” and expanded to the property they are at now.
“We enjoy what we do, and we’re all volunteers,” said James Elliott, BUFA cofounder.
Applying for the grant was a tough process. “We received over 400 applications,” said Gary Grijalva, director of sales for Nature’s Path, the company funding the grant. Out of all applicants, only 22 received prize money.
