Iowa Starting Line is entering another expansion phase as we build out our newsroom in 2021 and focus on developing a broader readership audience in Iowa. In particular, we plan on expanding our social media reach and producing stories that better reach Iowans where they’re already at online.
We are hiring for several positions. See job descriptions here:

As Iowa’s supply of vaccines continue to increase from the federal government, many Iowans are searching everywhere they can online to find out where to acquire them. Last week, the state opened up vaccines to those under 65 years of age with a certain medical or health condition. Just today, Polk County announced that they would have enough supply to get to that stage starting on March 15.
One new tracking option that popped up in the last day is this automated Twitter account called IAVaccineAlerts. It tweets out locations of available vaccine appointments when it finds them, though it notes that openings often get taken up quickly.

While Iowa’s COVID-19 vaccine rollout started slow and has run into problems caused by poor planning, the state is seeing real results from the quickly researched and produced vaccines.
The most noticeable difference between now and the worst days of the pandemic come from Iowa’s nursing homes, which have suffered the brunt of tragedy. As of Monday afternoon, there are only 19 longterm care facilities currently experiencing an outbreak (defined as three or more positive current cases).
As the AARP’s Brad Anderson noted last week, that’s less than half of the number of outbreaks from several weeks ago, and much lower than the 162 active outbreaks back in December.
