Pastoral Perspective

At times we are baffled by the choices made by some of God’s most gifted children.
Sometimes, people with special talents make conscientious choices to flout traditional expectations. They would rather ruffle our feathers than spend their lives fitting neatly into boxes. Some people are eccentric simply because they enjoy being eccentric.
In other cases, a person’s unique personal style may simply reflect benign neglect. Some people just have their minds on other things.
In the Christian life, we don’t get any extra points for being different just for the sake of being different. We’ve all heard the phrase “different is good.” Our culture easily embraces that kind of sentiment. We have a number of celebrity entertainers whose eccentricity is greater than their body of work.

Have you ever had a really bad day? I mean a really really bad day?
Thirty eight years ago in January, I had one of those days. These are the kind of days you never forget. They are imprinted on your soul for the rest of your life.
It was a simple jump shot during a drill after school, something I had done thousands of times. But this time, when I landed my ankle exploded. The cheerleaders on the other side of the gym heard it pop it was so loud.
While the coaches were attending to me and trying to get me to stop yelling, my mother walked in the gym. I guessed that they had called her to come pick me up and take me to the hospital.
