Mīharo Murihiku Trust chairwoman Pauline Smith is now a Member of the New Zealand Order of Merit for her work to the pacific arts and the community
One of the greatest accomplishments of the polyfest has been its ability to create an acceptance and understanding of diverse cultures in Southland. Pauline Smith is now a Member of the New Zealand Order of Merit for her work in the pacific arts and the community. Smith is the chairperson of Mīharo Murihiku Trust, previously the Murihiku Māori and Pasifika Trust Cultural Trust. In 2009, she was a founding member of the first Murihiku Polyfest, which led to the establishment of the Murihiku Maori and Pasifika Cultural Trust in 2010 in order to make it an annual event.

Pacific people are a growing, youthful and diverse population both in New Zealand and in the Pacific region, and one young leader making waves is Leulua’iali’i Satuala Tofaeono Tanuvasa.
The New Zealand-born Samoan matai from the village of Vaie e, with connections to Nofoali i, Siumu, Fagali i, and Vailima was a recipient at the recent inaugural Pacific Cooperation Foundation (PCF) Youth Leadership Awards.
Held in early December, the awards encourage and reward service leadership to benefit communities in Aotearoa New Zealand, as well as the Pacific region.
Law student and youth leader Leulua’iali’i collected the Ministry for Pacific Peoples (MPP) sponsored PCF Top Pasifika Cultural and Language Advocate Award for his leadership and service in his respective community.

The Pacific Cooperation Foundation (PCF) announced the winners for its Inaugural Pacific Cooperation Foundation Youth Leadership Awards at Parliament on Wednesday.
The awards ceremony was hosted by the Hon Aupito William Sio, Minister for Pacific Peoples and Associate Minister of Foreign Affairs.
PCF lead/management consultant Afamasaga Jackie Curry said, “The aim of the PCF Youth Leadership Awards is to encourage and reward service leadership to benefit our communities not just in Aotearoa New Zealand, but also the Pacific region.
“Pacific people are a growing, youthful and diverse population both in New Zealand and in the Pacific region, so these awards acknowledge and encourage the contribution and achievements of our young Pacific emerging leaders as well as their families who support them,” Afamasaga said.

The PCF awards acknowledge young leaders and their service to their communities in their respected fields.
There are 10 official award categories in total, with five awards especially set aside for Pacific students from the Pacific region studying in New Zealand.

PCF management consultant Afamasaga Jackie Curry said in her opening speech at the ceremony that the accolades encouraged and rewarded service leadership to benefit communities in Aotearoa as well as the Pacific. Pacific people are a growing, youthful and diverse population, so these awards are a tangible way that we can acknowledge and encourage the contribution and achievements of our young Pacific emerging leaders, as well as their families who have supported them in their journey, Curry said.
