10 Directors to Watch: Pascual Sisto Drops Cannes Curiosity John and the Hole at Sundance

Pascual Sisto completed his cut of “John and the Hole” for the Cannes deadline in the spring, and after submitting it, he took some time off. “And, of course, that time off became a pandemic,” Sisto says.
Though Cannes was canceled, the festival announced its lineup anyway, and “John and the Hole” made the cut. “It’s unbelievable how much support they have just by picking some films without even having a festival,” he says.

“John and the Hole” eventually premiered at Sundance. It’s a collaboration between Sisto and Nicolás Giacobone, the Oscar-winning “Birdman” screenwriter whom Sisto met in the late ’90s.
Sundance Film Festival finally goes virtual
Every year, the transition week between January and February has allowed me the opportunity to do two things: live vicariously through coverage of the Sundance Film Festival and pine for the day when I will be able to experience it for myself. Unfortunately, reality suggests that day will not be arriving in the near or distant future. Neither financially nor physically, the average film lover cannot reasonably buy a pass, a plane ride and full accommodations for a less-than-week-long event in Utah. Which is why I never would have guessed this year I and the friends who joined me in buying a combined total of five $15 tickets for five films would be attending from the comfort of my living room couch.

This year the 2021 Sundance Film Festival was virtual, and its offerings trimmed down from previous years. It included 73 feature films, 50 short films, four Indie Series, 23 talks and events, and 14 New Frontier multimedia projects. We watched 38 of the 73 films, including most of the award winners. Variety to Honor Glenn Close With Creative Impact in Acting Award at 10 Directors to Watch Virtual Event

Variety has announced it will be giving its Creative Impact in Acting Award to Glenn Close as part of their virtual 10 Directors to Watch and Creative Impact Awards event with the Palm Springs International Film Society on Feb. 26 at 10 a.m. PT.
As previously announced, Steve McQueen will be receiving the Creative Impact in Directing Award at the event. Close recently co-starred in the Netflix drama “Hillbilly Elegy” and has received nominations for a Golden Globe, SAG Award and Critics Choice Award for her portrayal of MaMaw in the film.
