Thank you. In many of the countries where our News Organization operates, this doesnt resonate because the notion of independence doesnt exist in a lot of countries around the world. You know, and particularly for news agencies. I think the standard definition of the news agency in most countries is something that is tied government. And the type of agency that ap and reuters are is sometimes hard for people to comprehend. When i was based in asia, i often had to explain that ap didnt stand for american press. I think intellectual, it is the difference between government and independent but there are countries in which every entity is controlled bit government and whether it is industry for education or media. This is a tactical maneuver aimed at pulling lee from his strong entrenchmentes. The army of the potomac shifts south, a drama take point in the war because up to this point, whatever Union Generals had been trounced in the battle as bad as lee had defeated grant and in the wilderness they always retreated but grant moved south to the court house and lee gets awe finger of his army in front of grant and blocks him and theres brutal fighting in places with names like the mule shoe and the bloody age that will goes on for over a week, will be 10 days and then finally grant realizes he cant break through there so grant maneuvers again. He pulls the union army out from spots vain yeah courthouse and send the finger
Starling is. If were just talking about the nsa, there are so many of them. And they are so technical, that i would be really surprised if the highlevel people know the details of more than a small number of the most major programs. I think you would be wrong about that. Yeah . I think so. Many could not perhaps describe the engineering details, but i would be surprised if there are more than a handful of programs that are not youre right, but there are i mean, impossible to count how many programs there are in the nsa. We can talk thousands, and probably more than thousands. And i just imagine its beyond the capacity of any individual to have significant knowledge about more than a handful of these thousands of programs. But i agree with bob dietz, and i agree with you. But the answer is, work the low level, the mid level, and the top, if you can. And youre going to get a total universe portrait. As you are aware, the investigation conducted by Anton Valukas revealed the failures behind the ignition switch recall including failures on the legal staff. When ms. Barra testified before this committee on april 2, a number of you, including you, chairman mccaskill, raised serious and important questions about the performance of the legal staff. And our responsibility in this tragedy as general counsel, im ultimately responsible for the Legal Affairs of the company. And im here today to answer your questions. I first learned about the cobalt ignition switch defect during the first week of february of this year. I immediately took action. I wish i had known about it earlier. Because i know i would have taken action earlier if i did. We had lawyers at General Motors who did not do their jobs. Didnt do what was expected of them. And those lawyers are no longer with
Make a wellinformed dialogue as part of those choices. Weve got to realize there is a wide range of opinions out there. The dialog represents multiple viewpoints. At its heart that is the strength of america. The idea that we can bring together lots of individuals with lots of different viewpoints and, yet, we can still remember who we are and what we are about.
