The unofficial start to summer is shaping up to rebound in a big way. More than 37 million Americans are planning to travel more than 50 miles from home this Memorial Day weekend, according to AAA. That’s a 60% increase from last year, when only 23 million people traveled, the lowest on record since AAA began recording in 2000.
But even in a bounce back year for travelers, a good number of folks are planning to stay home. This year’s travel forecast is still 6 million fewer travelers than Memorial Day 2019. And if the weather cooperates, that means there’s likely to be plenty of backyard gatherings, pool parties and hot dogs with all the fixings.
