The Ogiek are indigenous people who live in and around the Mau Forest on the south-western side of the Kenyan Rift Valley and in the forests around Mt. Elgon along Kenya’s north-western border with Uganda. The entire Ogiek belief system and livelihood relies on the forest and its resources, with honey being the most important product and a staple food for Ogiek families. Honey has always played a key role in various Ogiek cultural practices, is traded with neighbouring communities and was used to pay the dowry. In the past, Ogiek honey was so precious that only certain people could handle it. Traditional fermented beverages are also made from pure raw honey, used during social events and initiation ceremonies.
It is an organic farm certified by the Participatory Guarantee System (PGS) Davao City.
Huni Farm is a 3.5-hectare organic farm in Barangay Wangan, Calinan, Davao City that makes organic produce accessible to communities.
Among many farmers who hold fond childhood memories of farm life is Louella Garcia, the founder and manager of Huni Farm. She is the woman behind the success of this agribusiness built from scratch.
“I grew up on the farm of my dad. Growing up, I was already exposed to farm life. I remember that even at a young age, I was [already] taking care of our animals, [while also] planting [different crops] here and there. I was also very passionate about cooking,” said Garcia.

The National Centre for Organic Farming has approved the Prithivi Indigenous Natural Farmers Trust, Aadhirengam, in Thiruthuraipoondi taluk to function as Regional Council (RC) under the PGS-India programme to promote organic farming.
The NCOF, functioning under the Department of Agriculture, Cooperation and Farmers Welfare of the Union Government, is implementing the PGS-India (Participatory Guarantee System of India) programme, which is a quality assurance initiative that is locally relevant and emphasises the participation of producers and consumers of organic farming products.
The RCs formed under the programme will act as agencies to facilitate capacity-building, training, knowledge/technology dissemination among local farming groups.
