In 1086, the mechanisms of the Norman State achieved one of the most impressive feats of tabulation in history; a meticulous record of almost every inch of England. Eventually, this became known as “The Domesday Book” as it was assumed that the next time an account so thorough would be made would be the end of the world. Astonishingly you can still read it today, in the national archive in Kew.
