Estonian govt gets interim report on Rail Baltic 2021-06-03 BNS/TBT Staff TALLINN – At Thursday s meeting of the government, Estonia s Minister of Economic Affairs and Infrastructure Taavi Aas presented the government with an interim report on the establishment of the Estonian portion of Rail Baltic. According to the interim report, investments, research, and planning and design works were carried out via Rail Baltic in 2020 for nearly 21 million euros. In 2021-2023, costs will amount to 223 million euros, of which construction costs will amount to nearly 150 million euros.  In 2020, the Parnu County spatial planning procedure was updated, the construction of the Saustinomme viaduct was completed, construction tenders for three construction items on the main track were launched, 91 land plots necessary for construction were acquired, procedures were launched to acquire nearly 170 plots of land, and two financing agreements were signed to finance the project under the Connec

Investments raised by Estonian startups up 18-fold on year in Q1

The aggregate turnover of Estonian startups was €255 million in the first quarter of 2021, having increased by 26 percent year-on-year; startups also attracted a total of €194 million in investments, which is about 18 times more than in the same period last year. According to the Estonian Startup Database, there were 1,144 startups in Estonia at the end of the first quarter of this year, and 21 new startups were established in the same period of time, Startup Estonia said. The manager of Startup Estonia, Eve Peeterson, said that the coronavirus crisis dealt a painful blow both to traditional companies and the startup sector, but the Estonian startup sector has returned to growth by now.

Nearly 600 more deaths than births registered in March

Some 1,230 births and some 1,819 deaths were registered in Estonia in March, thus nearly 600 more deaths than births were registered during the month. According to the population facts department of the Ministry of the Interior, population registration offices across Estonia registered a total of 1,230 births during March and, among the children born, boys numbered 625 and girls 605. There were 21 pairs of twins among the children born during the month, including five pairs of boys, eight pairs of girls and eight mixed pairs. In a breakdown by region, births numbered 443 in Tallinn, 171 in Harju County, 13 in Hiiumaa, 77 in East-Viru County, 24 in Jogeva County, 33 in Jarva County, 14 in Laane County, 49 in West-Viru County, 14 in Polva County, 68 in Parnu County, 34 in Rapla County, 27 in Saaremaa, 165 in Tartu County, 23 in Valga County, 43 in Viljandi County and 32 in Voru County.
