‘Stakes are high’ as QAnon conspiracy phenomenon emerges in France France 24 20/02/2021 Tom WHEELDON © Ted Warren, AP After rising to the fore in the US during the most fraught presidential campaign the country has seen for decades, the QAnon phenomenon has emerged in France – prompting President Emmanuel Macron’s government to order a multiagency inquiry on conspiracist movements scheduled to report back at the end of February.   The French state agency responsible for tackling sectarian movements, MIVILUDES, has received some 15 reports over recent weeks raising the alarm about the rise of QAnon in France, Le Figaro reported. The agency described the development of the movement as “highly concerning” in an internal communication seen by the French paper.

In the 1990s, many math students chose to work in Wall Street, but now they re more likely to devote themselves to research, says Tian Gang, a leading mathematician and director of Beijing International Center for Mathematical Research (BICMR) at Peking University.   Sponsored by the Chinese government, BICMR aims to promote pioneering mathematical research and education, and enhance exchanges and cooperation among Chinese and foreign mathematicians.   In 2005, Peking University designated seven quadrangle courtyard buildings to establish BICMR, hoping to build a tranquil haven for mathematicians to meander, think and look for the artistry and beauty in numbers.     Administrative staff were carefully selected for the center. One of their duties is to help mathematicians avoid distraction by paperwork and chores, from renting an apartment to arranging meetings and seminars.
