For the past few months, we had been planning a run through the Paria Canyon. It flows thirty-six miles, snaking through Southern Utah and Northern Arizona, where it merges with the Colorado River at Leeâs Ferry Trailhead. Itâs is believed to be the longest slot canyon in the United States, carved by flash floods that tear through the area every summer.
Itâs a grueling course that most people backpack in a week. We were planning on attempting it in a day, bound to be met with rattlesnakes, quicksand, hundreds of river crossing and the unsettling possibility of flash floods, we were in for one hell of a trip.

Many of us may be feeling the itch to travel after staying home for almost a year as we continue living through a pandemic. When it is safe to travel again, it’s possible that our travel priorities have shifted. Maybe you prefer to spend more time outdoors. If you re wanting to get out more in nature and visit specific parks or recreation areas, you’re going to need to do some extra planning. Several U.S. parks require entering and winning a lottery to have the opportunity to visit, such as reaching the summit of Half Dome or rafting down the San Juan River. Implementing a lottery is one way to minimize human impact on fragile ecosystems by reducing crowds and traffic.
BLM releases draft recreation business plan for public review
KANAB, Utah – Today, the Bureau of Land Management (BLM) released the Draft Business Plan for the Kanab Field Office Campground Program for a 30-day public comment period. The plan includes details about improved amenities at the Ponderosa Grove and Whitehouse Campgrounds and outlines potentially associated fees. The Ponderosa Grove Campground is located in Kane County along Hancock Road, approximately 16 miles northwest of Kanab, and the White House Campground is located approximately 50 miles east of Kanab. Both are located on public lands managed by the BLM Kanab Field Office.
