There’s synergy between plans for two huge projects that could help shape San Diego County’s future for generations to come.
The $160 billion regionwide transportation plan has a main high-speed rail line that stretches from San Ysidro near the border with Mexico to Oceanside at the northern edge of the county.
The tracks would run right through a massive housing and commercial development proposed by the Navy on the current NAVWAR site not far from San Diego International Airport.
For planners, it may be a match made in heaven. The transportation plan depends on high-density housing along the transportation corridors. The Navy is looking to partner with a private developer to build up to 10,000 units in high-rises along Pacific Highway.

National City’s Paradise Valley Hospital plans to end its obstetrics, labor and delivery services due to a steady decline in births, a pattern seen across San Diego County, health officials said.
With the hospital’s birthing center slated to close Aug. 4, a “comprehensive transition plan” is underway to connect expectant mothers to nearby hospitals with obstetrical services such as Sharp Chula Vista Medical Center, Scripps Mercy Hospital Chula Vista and Scripps Mercy San Diego. Each is located within a 10-mile radius of Paradise Valley.

The Paradise Valley Hospital announced plans to begin the closure of its obstetrics, labor and delivery, and newborn nursing units due to a 10-year decline in birth rates.
“Our team has had the privilege of delivering tens of thousands of babies in National City, and the decision to close our obstetrics unit means we will redirect resources to where there is a greater community need,” said Neerav Jadeja, Chief Executive Officer of Paradise Valley Hospital. “The demand for perinatal care, labor and delivery and neonatal services at Paradise Valley is not what it once was, and this has forced us to focus on growing other essential services based on community need.
