Back here in our area two deaths in icy ponds, one year apart. Family and friends of 13yearold Austin Pendergrass gathered at the shore of a south reno pond and released balloons at the exact moment he was pulled year ago. Ventured out on the ice through and was underwater for a half hour. He was pronounced dead hours later at a local hospital. Just hours before todays memorial . A 19 year old man drowned at Paradise Park after falling through the ice. Pendergrass it broke my heart because its still happening. I dont understand why its not stopped. The name of the 19 year old who died this morning at Paradise Park isnt yet released. He was with family members who were putting themselves at risk when rescuers arrived. Veteran Water Rescue Team members say you should call for help and never venture out on ice to rescue someone yourself. Local officials tell us ponds where the ice is deemed safe.
