steve: this morning the first victims have been identified. more to come. rachel: that s right. and grady trim somebody live from highland park with the latest on this trealgd. grady? good morning, steve, rachel and brian. this is the police station where police say they brought the gunman after that 8 hour manhunt finally came to an end yesterday. police say that he opened fire from the roof of a downtown business with what they described as a high powered rifle just after 10:00 yesterday morning at highland park s fourth of july parade. families, including children and parents scrambled, ran for their lives as gunshots rang out. it was frightening. it was very frightening. we are okay. we are okay, right. how many shots did you hear? 40, fifth. i don t know. tons, and it went on for a minute or more. police say five adults died at the scene. one other person died at the hospital. the family of nicholas say the grandfather, who was visiting from mexico,
brian: so, warren, this guy is about lived very close to where the parade site was. have you talked to anybody that knows him, knows the family? evidently the dad ran for mayor. is this a known name in the area? my wife is actually from the highland park area. she didn t know the name. we found he graduated from high school in 2019. so, he was a graduate of highland park high school, but why? what made him turn so bad? why did he get so angry and so frustrated? what could we have done to help him better? that s the questions we want to as a family understand more why? why does someone do this and what makes them feel so compelled to get so angry and so frustrated. we want to help. brian: here you are locked up from the pandemic two years. everything has been canceled. we are finally getting back to normal and then something like this happens. incredible. yeah, it s so frustrating even my kids with a sensory were
she also said she saw two bodies and body bags that were laying nearby. and as you can see at this hour now, almost four hours after the incident began, lower manhattan still very much experiencing a very heavy security presence. we traveled a few blocks from here, a very different scene. it might just be an ordinary day hearing in new york city. underscoring that, the halloween parade that is an annual event is going to take place tonight, and we are told that new york city mayor bill de blasio is headed in that direction now. he wants to personally inspect the security at the parade site. he said earlier that what happened here in lower manhattan was a cowardly act. at this hour, at least eight dead, a dozen people injured. as the investigation continues. bret: david lee miller live on the scene, thank you.
