NEWBURY para-powerlifter Louise Sugden continued her charge towards the re-arranged Paralympic Games in Tokyo by securing a silver medal at a recent event.
Sugden, 36, came second in the up to 86kg category at the Para Powerlifting World Cup, which took place in Manchester over the weekend.
It didn’t come easy for her though, as her first two attempts were unsuccessful – putting a significant amount of pressure on the final go.

PARA-powerlifter Louise Sugden admitted that it’s been difficult to stay motivated during training sessions since the coronavirus pandemic began.
The lockdown restrictions have had a huge effect on her normal schedule so a return to action is something she is relishing.
She said: After almost a year of no competitions I’m delighted to have been selected for the Manchester 2021 World Cup and I’m very much looking forward to representing Great Britain again.
A SPORTS and exercise science undergraduate at Leeds Trinity University has been selected to represent Team GB at the Para Powerlifting World Cup. Charlotte McGuinness, 19, will compete at the event in Manchester in March. The competition also gives her the opportunity to qualify for the rescheduled 2021 Tokyo Paralympic Games, due to take place in August. Charlotte, who is seventh in the world in her weight category and third in the world for the junior weight category, is supported through the University’s Talented Athlete Support Package, which assists student athletes competing at a high level in their sport to manage their studies and their sports careers. She is currently training four times a week in preparation for the World Cup. She is among a team of 13 athletes selected by British Weight Lifting, and will compete against athletes from across the world in the bench press women up to 50kg category.
