we are grate. . the beat with ari melber starts right now. see you tuesday. i m ari melber, we begin with the breaking news. we start the new week with the federal defendant, donald trump, back in florida. this is the eve of his federal arraignment tomorrow, and he made the trip from new jersey preparing to voluntarily surrender into federal custody for the first time as a defendant. that is the consequence of the indictment unsealed and briefly explained by jack smith on friday. the former president indicted for breaking several laws including the espionage act and laws relating to obstruction of justice. trump is current still seeking what he needs legally, the required local counsel, amidst reports that many are balking at him as a quote nightmare client. now, sooner or later, you can find a lawyer there that s not going to be a hangup forever, but it is a striking piece of legal reality for donald trump here on the eve of that arraignment. he spent the weekend out o
robinson, apparently tired, punched fairly well and rocked jake right to his heels. come on, ray. a director and actor finds a story at the right time and the right place. and out comes this amazing combination of cinematic virility and absolute fear. it s like watching an animal. i think raging bull is a great title. and the film fulfills the promise. the reality of the boxing and the great slow motion, all of the black-and-white gore, the violence of the flash bulbs going off. when he designed the movie, marty, he purposefully didn t put a clutch on the film. there s no clutch. hey, ray, you never went down, ray. you never got me down, ray. raging bull is a boxing movie for people who don t like boxing movies, but it s really not about that. it s about this man, jake, based on a real person, who s really at war with himself. come on. harder. harder. i didn t really understand boxing, but the character was interesting. he was just so contr
they have a shield over them, and the magic power is the government can t get them because they have privilege. they could do whatever. you see when he s talking to corcoran about the hillary clinton lawyer, he thinks in his head, it s the wizardry, why can t you do this magical thing and magically protect me from it. you can do it. you can dispose of evidence, you re a lawyer, you have been entrusted by your magic power. i can t do it, but why can t you do it. that s the way he concedes with the lawyers, and routinely, he has pushed the boundaries of what is ethical, and legal to do so for lawyers. this is a question i wanted to ask you, we didn t get into in our breaking news friday, what do you think when you compare jack smith s story telling, which is what the speaking indictment is, which is a preview of the story they re going to try to tell a jury,
before donald trump spoke, i know that s a big if, but if you had the paper case, and he didn t speak about it, if he was a more quiet subject of interest, what i ve told viewers before is the best defense in a mock trial, professor, would be the u-haul defense. busy client, load up the u-haul, i don t know what s in there. they came to search. i don t know what the search s. busy client. what do you think of the fact that jack smith has cornered him with receipts from inside mar-a-lago, and inside the legal team. we re open to all defenses. we re going to be covering this next thing if it goes to trial. the u-haul defense has been shredded by the client, professor. i think it s important to understand here that jack smith, regrettably has to try this case at two different levels, one in an actual court of law, and then in the court of public opinion where you have this defendant who has an enormous bully
plead not guilty. the terms of bail will also be set. there will not be cameras inside the courtroom tomorrow, we know that, and as of this hour, we don t know whether or not a mugshot would be taken. there would be a scanner for fingerprints, but whether a mugshot is deemed necessary in this scenario is kind of a moot legal question. in other words, they could do it or not do it, either way, this is not a situation where they re trying to ascertain what the defendant looks like as far as the government is concerned. when it s over, trump will fly to new jersey. we can tell you, as i mentioned with chris hayes, after the arraignment tomorrow night, we have special coverage led by rachel and all of our colleagues at 8:00 p.m. eastern tomorrow. so stay tuned and i ll be right back.
