In 1966, Uncle Sam took the U.S. mail off passenger trains and began to move it by truck and plane. Passenger service came to a halt in many towns over the next 20 years, and depots tumbled. But not the one in Marshall.
Madison County native Forrest Jarrett, Norfolk Southern director of police in the 1980s, got a call from his mother, Mama Linda. Forrest! Yes, ma am. They re going to tear the old Marshall depot down. We don t want that to happen. No, ma am. That s where Papa Olin caught the train to come to see me down at Hot Springs.
