In her 2018 Oscar acceptance speech, Frances McDormand stood on stage and said: “I have two words to leave you with tonight, ladies and gentlemen: Inclusion rider.” A contractual rider meant to ensure meaningful diversity when it comes to hiring people both behind and in front of the camera, it garnered a lot of news coverage in the days after that Oscar broadcast. But the idea itself never seemed to gain traction. Even McDormand eventually walked back her words, telling The Hollywood Reporter nearly three years later: “I wish I’d never (expletive) said it now.”
