Former Spur CEO Pierre van Tonder allegedly shot himself in the basement of his Sea Point, Cape Town flat on Sunday.
According to Daily Maverick, the incident was an apparent suicide attempt. Van Tonder survived and is in a critical condition in a Cape Town hospital. Attempts to get comment from Spur were not successful, but the company said it would issue a statement on Monday.

Spur Corporation will further defer the payment of its 2020 interim dividend “until future cash flows can be predicted with a greater confidence level”. This follows erratic trading patterns due to Covid-19 trading restrictions.

The franchise restaurant chain has been hit hard by the lockdowns. The implementation of curfews, a ban on the sale of alcohol and the required reduced seating capacity has battered its profits, prompting the company to defer paying the 2020 interim dividend for the third time.Â
Spur, which operates over 600 stores including Panarottis Pizza Pasta, RocoMamas and John Doryâs, notified its shareholders on Tuesday that paying the interim dividend would reduce the groupâs cash reserves and result in a cash deficit should the country experience a third resurgence (wave) of Covid-19.Â

The closure of the Golden Spur Steak Ranch, the very first of the restaurant franchise group which has grown to include more than 600 outlets, has been met with sadness by the Newlands community.
For 53 years, the Golden Spur was an integral part of the community’s social fabric but now the premises, located in Ashley Cooper House on the corner of Main Road and Dean Street, stands empty with the familiar Spur signage removed.
