A Hispanic-owned grocery has committed to building South Bend’s largest Hispanic grocery store at the northwest corner of Olive Street and Western Avenue under a deal unanimously approved Thursday by the city’s Redevelopment Commission.
Panaderia Y Supermercado would break ground within a year and finish construction within three years on the lot that’s been vacant since 2016, when the city bought the former Polish National Alliance Lodge 83 building and demolished it to improve the intersection. The store would be at least 10,000 square feet, larger than the 7280-square-foot Rosales Plaza located nearby at 2812 W. Western Ave. and the 5,632-square-foot Rosales Super Mercado at 1518 S. Michigan St. on the city’s south side, according to county property tax records.
