Nashua agrees to settlement over English language education

NASHUA, N.H. (AP) The Nashua School District has reached an agreement with the U.S. Department of Justice over its failure to provide students with the necessary instruction and support to learn English.
The Justice Department, which announced the settlement Monday, had opened an investigation into the district’s program for English learner students in July 2019. Among other problems, it found that the district failed to provide sufficient services to hundreds of students, lacked enough teachers certified in English as a Second Language, didn’t communicate well with parents with limited English proficiency and did not adequately monitor the academic progress of former English learner students.
Justice sues Mobile County sheriff over sexual harassment

MOBILE, Ala. (AP) The Justice Department sued the Mobile County Sheriff’s Office on Wednesday over claims it ignored claims of female jailers who say they are being sexually harassed by male prisoners.
The sex discrimination federal lawsuit, filed in Mobile, said female jail workers are regularly subjected to lewd comments, threats of sexual violence and male prisoners who expose themselves.
A dozen female jailers filed a complaint with the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission, the complaint said, but Sheriff Sam Cochran and others failed to take the complaints seriously or act to stop the problem.
