SANFORD, Fla. – Jury selection is scheduled to begin Monday in the trial of Thomas Garner, who’s accused of killing Navy recruit Pamela Cahanes in Seminole County in 1984.
Garner was arrested on first-degree murder charges in Jacksonville in 2019 after investigators used DNA to track him down.

“I guess I didn’t think this day would come,” said Eileen Bergmann, Cahanes’ older sister. “It was 1984, they didn’t have DNA in those days and (the case) went on and on.”

She had just graduated from Navy boot camp. Garner went to the Naval Training Center in Orlando during the same time as Cahanes.At the time of her death, authorities had evidence that included DNA that was found under Cahanes fingernails.More DNA was found at the scene, but authorities at the time were unable to find out whom it belonged to.Advances in DNA research allowed investigators to build a DNA family tree that led them to Garner, her former Navy classmate.Jury selection should begin at 9 a.m.
