Meanwhile, the stock exchange operator’s quarterly revenue surged 54.08% to RM232.28 million against RM150.75 million, supported by higher trading revenue in the securities and Islamic market segments.
Bursa Malaysia, however, did not declare any dividends for the quarter.
On a quarter-on-quarter basis, the group’s operating revenue increased marginally by 0.68% from RM230.7 million due to increase in revenue from the securities and derivatives market segments. Nevertheless, its net profit grew 16% from RM104.85 million in 4QFY20, underpinned by lower operating expenses.

PETALING JAYA: Bursa Malaysia Bhd’s net profit soared 88% to RM121.39 million in the first quarter ended March 31, 2021 from RM64.73 million reported in the same quarter of the previous year, on the back of higher operating revenue.
Revenue for the quarter stood at RM232.28, a 54.1% jump from RM150.75 million reported previously.
Securities market registered trading revenue of RM150.9 million compared to RM78.1 million in Q1’20, increased by 93.3% due to higher average daily trading value (ADV) for on-market trades (OMT) in Q1’21.
Derivatives market trading revenue decreased by 15.7% to RM22.6 million in Q1’21 from RM26.7 million in Q1’20, mainly due to lower number of contracts traded for Crude Palm Oil Futures and FTSE Bursa Malaysia KLCI Futures, as well as the lower number of trading days in the current quarter under review. PETALING JAYA: The GameStop stock frenzy cannot happen on Malaysia’s stock exchange as there are controls in place, said Bursa Malaysia Bhd CEO Datuk Muhamad Umar Swift, calling the phenomenon a “unique series of circumstances”.
“GameStop requires unique circumstances where the asset has been oversold. It’s not possible to oversell an asset 140% in our market. Therefore it is a unique series of events that allowed for a short squeeze,” he said at a virtual press conference on Bursa Malaysia’s FY2020 financial performance yesterday.
