quite a thing to see. and this is steve harrigan s camera right there in naples. we know that we re kind of in the eye or had been on the back side of this storm, we ve been watching the radar. there s a lot of rain, some heavy wind and some serious storm surge that s on the way. you can see palm fronds are down. that s pretty normal. we ll be interested to know how bad the damage is, especially down in marco island and then in naples through which it is now passing and then as it moves forward up to fort myers. from the current track, it looks like the eye of the storm may actually pass to the east of fort myers. so the storm, the land curves up and to the left, up and to the west and juttes out more into the water. and as the if the storm continues in a direct north movement, then we believe that the storm is going to move to thest to east of fort myers
surge here all morning long. debris, flying debris, is really a danger right here. right off flagler drive in west palm beach. what we re told by our cnn weather team is that we are on the so-called dirty side of the storm. violent push of energy and violent activity. pop-up tornadoes, we re told, will be occurring all day at and where we are now. it s very violent on the street right now. palm treem trooes are under severe strain here. we re keeping a close eye on them. i m sure you note from being out there, what you have to do constantly is look up for flying debris, watch out for yourself and your team as things are flying around on the street. we re keeping a close eye on these power and telephone lines here. another danger, these massive palm fronds. this thing probably weighs 25 pounds or so. these things are getting tossed around like they re nothing. several over here on the street and we can show you another potential danger as we walk over
there s still there s still about 60 feet of sand between dunes and the actual water line. okay. i m looking down at collins avenue, i see some palm fronds, i don t see any flooding or anything like that. all right. we re going to keep close to you. by the way, how are your parents friends who you are with who you are taking care of? are they doing okay? they re very agitated. yeah. they re very, very agitated and they didn t want me to i slept on their couch last night because they didn t want me to leave them. yeah. so that s exactly what i did. so i ve gotten maybe an hour and a half of sleep all night. josé, you went there to pay homage to your mother whose ashes you had scattered in the waters just below that building when you swam out there a year ago and you were worried that you weren t going to memorialize her. i think it s share to say you re memorializing your mother very well taking care of your parents two closest friends. thank you very much, jos
and the wind intensity has really picked up in the last 145 minutes. these palm trees are really starting to get compromised. palm fronds and coconuts are starting to become projectiles. they re flying all over the place here. and just below it you see street signs wobbling. and even these sturdy expansions behind me with the streetlights on them, are starting to wobble. so that s a real concern. we re basically in the window now where people call 911 and they re not going to be able to come out and get them. he said there s a big concern about the construction cranes like the one in miami that snapped or at least cracked, there s one over here. the chief assured me these are secured, that the tops of them are pulling with the wind. so they re supposed to do that. they re supposed to go around like a weather vane. they are pulling with the wind.
next to waterway getting flooded. that could happen at any moment because the storm surge is intensifying. i heard chad talking about a tornado at the airport south of here at fort lauderdale. we re in the middle of possible tornadic activity all day long pap threat, told by the weather team, pop-up tornadoes hitting, or could threaten us for most of the day today. look at just how intense this wind is. look at the flagler street holding the traffic light that s swaying. these regular traffic signs are swaying violently. all of this stuff, these are all potential projectiles. the palm trees here have been really swaying almost vile lnov, in some cases almost snapping. palm fronds flying around like cardboard. even in these conditions, john, we can tell you not everybody is cooperating with orders to stay off the streets. we were just told by palm beach
