And WA effectively shut its border to NSW from midnight on Thursday after a jump in number of locally acquired COVID-19 cases in NSW. Premier Mark McGowan said WA was very concerned there would be many more cases in NSW as it moved swiftly to shut the border. Anyone who arrives in WA from NSW from midnight on Thursday will be required to self-quarantine for 14 days in a move that will play havoc with the Christmas travel plans of thousands of people.

Health alerts have been issued across the Northern Beaches and in Peakhurst after three Sydneysiders tested positive for COVID-19 on Wednesday, marking the first locally acquired cases in almost two weeks. A 45-year-old man who worked as a van driver shuttling airport crew to and from their hotels was the first case detected on Wednesday morning. Health authorities stressed he was not a public taxi driver.
