In 1954 in Paris, the pianist Mary Lou Williams walked off the jazz bandstand at age 44, suddenly and at the very height of her fame. She had finally succumbed to her midlife panic and bouts of self-loathing that were enough to make just about anyone want simply to exit the stage. Thus began a chain of events leading to her conversion to Catholicism and to a new life’s purpose in composing jazz Masses worthy of performance at the Vatican. More than this, Williams came to write “Mary Lou’s Mass” to capture her feeling of suffering and its apotheosis. She was helped in this mission by a young Jesuit priest and jazz devotee, Peter O’Brien, who became her manager, confidant, lifelong friend and eventually her archivist.

New Bolinas group will work to combat racism

The group convened for the first time last month, responding to the defacement of Black Lives Matter signs and a recent appearance of swastikas inside the Bolinas Post Office, which employees immediately took down. “A person of color found out about the swastikas and called me and was really upset, feeling like things that have been happening all year here were escalating and that members of the community weren’t feeling safe and needed support. The request is for white residents in the community to think about this now,” said Evie Wilhelm, who convened the meeting. On Monday, during the group’s second call, one person of color shared an experience of being verbally abused in the Palace Market the day before, while she wore a Black Lives Matter mask.
