A teachers' union and community groups in Monterey County have sued agriculture officials and state regulators over the use of pesticides near schools.
"Directing more funding to smaller nonprofit agencies rather than cumbersome large bureaucracies could also help," writes the Editorial Board. "Meanwhile the state needs to look at why smaller communities such as Santa Cruz County are beginning to make some headway on this crisis."
Santa Cruz County has benefited with nearly $22.9 million in state Project Homekey grants funding creation of 84 housing units for formerly homelessless individuals since 2022. The county also has received at least $10.4 million in state Homeless Encampment Resolution Grants in that time period, one targeting assistance toward individuals living along the San Lorenzo River, the other for those living in the Pajaro River riverbed.
