Halloween is HUGE in Pahrump! Don’t get caught with a full bowl of candy and nary a child in sight on Halloween night like I did my first year here. Pahrump looks forward to handing out candy and treats to our youngsters so much that tradition has evolved into a “Trunk or Treat” phenomenon. Those of us who live on an acre or more drive our vehicles to a community gathering (or two! or three!), pop our trunks, decorate appropriately, and host little goblins at a site where they can gather a respectable amount of candy loot traveling from trunk to trunk. Adult costumes are optional, but fun and notable. Dress your friendly pets, too. Get out to one of the Trunk or Treat gatherings scheduled for Friday through Tuesday, and have a howling good time. The 149th Kentucky Derby runs Saturday at Churchill Downs in Louisville, KY, for insanely expensive 3-year-old thoroughbred horses. Forte was installed Monday afternoon as the 3-1 favorite for this 1.25 mile race. Scheduled for a 3:57 p.m. PDT post time, it will be televised by NBC and Peacock at Pahrump’s favorite bars. The purse is a whopping $3 million. The VFW Post plans a hat contest, raffle, games, and pulled pork sandwiches to mark the occasion.
