After the Islamic Revolution in 1979, women were given equal rights to shape their futures. The revolution provided them a chance to build their distinct political identity and they have been tremendously successful in doing that.
The widely reported protests of the past few weeks in Iran were sparked by the death of a young Kurdish woman, Mahsa Amini, allegedly at the hands of the police.
In February 1979, after demonstrators briefly attacked the US embassy in Tehran, preparing to leave the country an American declared: “We used to run this country. Now we don’t even run our own embassy”.”
