Mary saluted with a drive-by to mark her 100th birthday

Mary Shannon of Cloontia celebrated her 100th birthday recently. Originally from Doocastle, Mary is the eldest of 11 siblings and sister to Batty Sherlock, Doocastle, Rita Mulligan, Gurteen and Micheal Sherlock, England. Mary is mother to Micheal Shannon, Tubbercurry, Padraig Shannon, Cloontia and Caroline Shannon, Ballaghaderreen. Born on 28th November 1920, Mary went to London in 1939 to train as a nurse and midwife. She trained during World War 11 and the London Blitz and has many amazing stories to tell from that time. She returned to Ireland in 1958 and married her late husband, Patrick Shannon and settled in Cloontia with her family. Her nursing skills were used throughout the neighbourhood from looking after the sick, delivering babies and caring for the elderly.
