BHUBANESWAR: Chief minister Naveen Patnaik on Wednesday underlined Odisha’s strategic advantage of long coastline and emphasized on port-led development through industrialization and connectivity as he chaired the first meeting the of state Sagarmala committee. Addressing the meeting over videoconference, the chief minister said that the Sagarmala project can further enable Odisha to emerge as a major logistics destination. He also stressed on development of coastal community, a major objective under the initiative. The Sagarmala, an initiative of the Narendra Modi government aims port-led development and improvement of waterways in the country.

Share Via Email   |  A+A A- By Express News Service BHUBANESWAR: The State government on Monday signed an MoU with Inland Waterway Authority of India (IWAI) for operation and management of Ro-Ro (Roll-on Roll-off) vessel MV Bhupen Hazarika from Satapada to Janhikuda in Puri district.  The MoU was signed by IWAI Chief Engineer SVK Reddy and Director of Ports and Inland Water Transport Padma Lochan Raul in presence of Commerce and Transport Minister Padmanabha Behera, IWAI Chairperson Amita Prasad and Principal Secretary, Commerce and Transport department Madhu Sudan Padhi. Odisha: Stray violence marks Congress's bandh against fuel price hike | Bhubaneswar News

Cops, Congress workers tussle with each others in Bhubaneswar BHUBANESWAR: The state wing of Congress on Monday resorted to a six-hour ‘Odisha bandh’ to press the Centre and the state government to bring down fuel prices. Stray incidents of violence were reported in some places but the bandh was, by and large, peaceful. Observed from 7 am to 1 pm, the bandh saw complete closure of educational institutes and partial disruption of public transport and commercial activities across the state. Incidentally, the protest coincided with another rise in fuel prices on Monday. The price of petrol in Bhubaneswar was hiked to Rs 89.68/litre from Rs 89.42/litre on Sunday. The price of diesel went up to Rs 86.45/litre in the capital on Monday from Rs 86.13 the previous day.

Referring to Commerce and Transport Minister Padmanabha Behera’s allegation that allocation in the budget has been far less than expectation, Pradhan said, “Some people have been saying something without having facts.”

BJD criticises centre for lower allocation of Rail funds, BJP trashes claim

Odishas ruling BJD has criticised the centre for meagre allocation of Railway funds to the state in the budget 2021-22, a charge dismissed by the BJP whose leaders asserted that Prime Minister Narendra Modi has all along given priority to the state and provided sufficient money. The BJD has expressed its dissatisfaction over allocation of Rs 6,995 crore for the rail network expansion in the state in the budgetary allocation spelled by Union Finance minister Nirmala Sitharaman in Parliament. Odishas Commerce and Transport minister Padmanabha Behera dubbed the railway allocation for 2021-22 fiscal as disappointing . The party s spokesperson Lenin Mohanty came out with a more sharp comment saying, During the colonial era, the Britishers used railway lines for looting minerals from Odisha and it is a matter of regret that the same is being practiced by the central government of today even after 75 years of Independence.
