It was an unbelievably beautiful weekend at Churchill Downs for the 147th Run For The Roses. I had never been to the Kentucky Derby, so I was very excited to experience the moment when all eyes are on Kentucky for the fastest two minutes in sports.
I got an early start, heading out to the track for the Kentucky Oaks on Friday. It was a perfect day for racing and you know I had to enjoy an Oaks Lily with my pink dress!
Despite a reduced capacity the Derby felt like a true return to normal in many ways. It was the first time I got to reunite with many of my friends since we ve all had the opportunity to get vaccinated.

Although the Kentucky Derby is going to look and feel a little different this year, I m just happy it s happening. It s a welcome return to normal for the Kentuckiana area and will bring a big boost to the local economy this weekend. The biggest event in the state was sidelined during its usual week last year, with the horses eventually running without spectators on Labor Day weekend 2020.
This is my first ever Kentucky Derby so of course I had to track down the picture perfect Derby dress. Thanks to my friends at That Cute Little Shop in the Paddock Shops, I got to play dress up and try on a number of outfits. Which one did I pick? Stay tuned to WAMZ s socials to find out!
Taking a trip from Louisville to Cincinnati in the next few days? Take note – key portions of Interstate 71 will be closed at times over the weekend.
I-71 North will be closed overnight Friday, from 10 p.m. to 6 a.m. Saturday, between exits 9 and 14, while that same stretch along I-71 South will be closed from 10 p.m. Saturday to 6 a.m. Sunday, as workers on the I-Move Kentucky projects demolish the old KY-1694 Brownsboro Road bridge over the highway.
The detour is about 9 miles long and will send drivers on KY-329, KY-22 and Interstate 265 to get around the closure, which begins at the highway ramp near the Paddock Shops in east Louisville and continues into Crestwood. Signage and flaggers will be on site, and local police will help to direct traffic. The detour route will be unable to handle wide loads.
