When Apple first announced the iPhone 12 Pro and iPhone 12 Pro Max back in October 2020, it was stated that one of the features that set the Pro line apart from the iPhone 12 and iPhone 12 mini was ProRAW. This is Apple s take on a RAW image format, which you ll commonly find in professional photography with standalone DSLR and mirrorless cameras, as RAW formats allow you to get the most data out of your images for editing. ProRAW became available on iPhone 12 Pro and 12 Pro Max devices as of iOS 14.3 released back in December 2020.
So what is ProRAW, and what makes it better than the regular JPEG or HEIC default formats on the best iPhone? Let s dive in and find out.

While 2020 certainly was the year that wasn t, it did manage to against all odds become the best year to purchase a new iPhone. We got amazing value, as we said in our iPhone SE (2020) review, along with four variations of the iPhone 12: the iPhone 12 mini, iPhone 12 , iPhone 12 Pro, and iPhone 12 Pro Max. No matter what you were looking for, there was plenty of choice for everyone when it came to the best iPhone.
But what about the next iteration of iPhone in 2021? Here s what I m hoping to see.
