Madrid s conservative leader Isabel Diaz Ayuso, a fierce critic of Covid-19 lockdowns, secured a major victory in Tuesday s regional election for Spain s capital city - an outcome likely to reshape the country s volatile political landscape.
The Popular Party s (PP) candidate took 65 seats in the 136-seat regional assembly - doubling its result from the previous 2019 election and consolidating her party s powerful position in the capital, where PP has governed for the last 26 years.

MADRID (Reuters) â Spainâs conservative Peopleâs Party (PP) said on Wednesday that its resounding win in Madrid in regional elections signalled âthe beginning of the endâ for Socialist Prime Minister Pedro Sanchezâs government.
However, Sanchezâs mandate runs for two more years and analysts said there was little incentive right now for him to hold an early national election.
The Madrid regionâs incumbent leader, the PPâs Isabel Diaz Ayuso, won re-election in Tuesdayâs elections boosted by her refusal to close down bars and shops during the COVID-19 pandemic.
The elections also strengthened the far-right Vox, saw the center-right Ciudadanos collapse, and dealt a blow to the left.
