Justice system, and ive seen lives devastated by violence. We like to imagine that after the verdict, the story is over, the victim and the offender are never meant to meet again. But for some, the only way to move forward is to come face to face with the person who shattered their lives. Im here in alaska, and theyve got so much just untouched, unspoiled, beauty. But they also have a really ugly problem up here with a drug epidemic. Theres a real cycle of addiction, crime, incarceration, release, still addicted, back to crime, back to jail. Its just an endless cycle, and 66 who get out of prison are returning back to prison within three years. So im up here to meet a woman named Terria Walters whose son, christopher, died in a drugrelated incident, and she wants to talk with the guy responsible for her sons death. State of alaska doesnt actually have a former victim offender dialogue program, so going to be the first ever and its kind of a big deal that youve got them to let her do it
I spent half my life working with the criminal justice system, and ive seen lives devastated by violence. We like to imagine that after the verdict, the story is over. The victim and the offender are never meant to meet again. But for some, the only way to move forward is to come face to face with the person who shattered their lives. So im here in twin lakes, wisconsin, population 6,041. People live here because they expect it to be peaceful and safe for their kids, but the chaos has come here in the form of this opioid crisis. And this town was torn apart by a horrific accident in june of 2013. Nathan walters was killed by somebody who was high on heroin. I want to meet with nathans mother, michelle. Shes a veteran teacher at a local elementary school. She wants to meet with the man whos responsible for her only sons death, and i want to find out why. Good to meet you. Good to meet you, too. Welcome to twin lakes. Glad to be here. Its its so massive, i got lost several times. So how
Being. Youre just two soldiers on a battlefield. We got shots fired. I saw him slide back. And i pulled the trigger. I closed on him. He was struggling with me. I fully intended to stop him. That included taking his life. Ive spent half my life working with the criminal justice system, and ive seen lives devastated by violence. We like to imagine that after the verdict, the story is over, the victim and the offender are never meant to meet again. But for some, the only way to move forward is to come face to face with the person who shattered their lives. Bakersfield, california, were only, like, an hour and a half from los angeles. They got altugriculture here, t got oil. A lot of poverty here, though. About 20 pock of the populati here is under the poverty line. Thats much worse than the national average. Im here to meet a former sheriffs deputy named tom morgan. Two decades ago, he got shot by a young gang member. He survived, and the two are going to meet face to face after all this
When i tell people my story, they dont believe it. I guess i wouldnt believe the story if someone else were telling it, but im telling it. And its true. Every word of it. It started when i was born. 56 years ago. But the real story began when i was 19 years old when i went to college. It was 1980. It was the first day of school at Sullivan County Community College up in the catskills about 110 miles from where i grew up. So i drove up there alone. I at least had this really old car. It was a volvo and it was a 1970 volvo. Had like 130,000 miles on it. The car was burgundy and the hood was green. Actually, the car was called the old bitch. But the old bitch got me there. Sullivan was a Community College. This wasnt some Longstanding Institution of higher learning. All these station wagons are dropping kids off. I was nervous. I just got to the school. I didnt know anybody. I was a freshman. I was never the captain of the Football Team in high school. So i was never really like popular.
