Embraer Founder Ozires Silva Receives Guggenheim Medal

Established in 1929 to honor innovators who have made notable achievements in the advancement of aeronautics, the medal is jointly sponsored by the American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics, American Society of Mechanical Engineers, SAE International, and the Vertical Flight Society “This distinguished recognition to Ozires Silva reflects his innovative and exceptional contributions to aviation. The lighter side of Flight International Moon monikers NASA famously named its Space Shuttle test orbiter ‘Enterprise’ in honour of the television show Star Trek, so surely there’s an opportunity for a similar homage via the Artemis programme to return to the Moon? Fans of the science-fiction series Space: 1999 will recall the exploits of castaways on a lunar outpost after the Moon is blasted out of orbit by a far-side nuclear explosion – although best you don’t think too hard about the Newtonian physics of that – which featured rocket craft called ‘Eagles’, echoing the Eagle lander that took Apollo 11 astronauts to the Moon’s surface.
