The second wave of the COVID-19 pandemic all over the world, no doubt, is spreading fast, killing faster and easily transmittable compared to the first wave. The rate at which many Nigerians are contracting the virus is beyond imagination as numbers of affected persons has increased drastically within the shortest period. This indicates that people need to continue to take necessary precautions by observing the prescribed non-pharmaceutical guidelines to curtail the spread of the virus.
Statistics from the Nigeria Centre for Disease Control as of December 17, 2020 showed a total confirmed cases of 76,206, 67,110 discharged and 1,201 deaths. As of January 11, 2021, the statistics showed that 101, 331 persons had been confirmed positive, 80, 491 discharged, while the total number of deaths increased to 1,361. Worried over the spike in COVID-19 infection in the second wave in the state, the Ekiti State government, yesterday, imposed a curfew from 8pm to 6am in the state.
This came as Governor Samuel Ortom of Benue State is currently on self isolation after one of his permanent secretaries (names withheld), and his entire family members tested positive.
Late Ibidapo-Obe
Prof. Oyewusi Ibidapo-Obe distinguished himself as a scholar and university administrator. A professor of Systems Engineering, he emerged the overall best graduating student at the University of Lagos (UNILAG) in 1971 with a Bachelor of Science (B.Sc) in Mathematics (First Class Division).
