Jonny Botherway has reopened the Viaduct restaurant and nightclub in central Christchurch, but says the new venue has “no real similarities” to the previous one of the same name.
The latest addition to The Terrace in central Christchurch may be familiar to a few. After being closed for nearly a decade due to earthquake damage and the city s uncertain hospitality scene, Viaduct reopened at its new upstairs location on Oxford Tce alongside the Avon River in December. The original bar was opened by Jonny Botherway in 1997 on Oxford Tce – then known as ‘The Strip – and served as a popular after-work drinks and weekend space along with adjoining venue di lusso, also owned by Botherway. The area is now known as The Terrace.
Festival organisers estimate about 2000 people saw the New Regent St Spectacular over three shows on Saturday.
The opening weekend of the Bread & Circus-Backyard Buskers Festival featured soldout shows and drew thousands to the streets of Christchurch despite New Zealand’s closed borders hitting tourist numbers. Festival director Scott Maidment said the opening weekend of the festival, which this year features exclusively Kiwi talent due to Covid-19 border restrictions, was a success. The Festival Gala hosted by the Topp Twins at the Isaac Theatre Royal on Sunday night was sold out, three shows by magician Jarred Fell at the Christchurch Casino also sold out, and about 400 people attended the Kids Comedy Gala on Sunday afternoon.

Terry Hao, owner of the Muffin Break inside the interchange, said police used to be there “pretty much every day”, but the situation had been improving in the past year. “It s a lot safer now.” Hao said the police often came to see if there was any trouble with kids and teenagers congregating. “They re just talking to each other, smoking outside. Sometimes they make some troubles, but it’s getting better now,” he said. Security had improved at the exchange since the Christchurch City Council became the owner in September 2019, Hao said. A council spokesman said “alternative solutions” were being offered to people who congregate at the interchange but do not use the buses.

Thousands of University of Canterbury (UC) students will fill central Christchurch for graduation processions, ceremonies and celebrations next week.
The upcoming graduations will be the largest in the university’s 147-year history, with six end-of-year graduation ceremonies and two separate celebration events to be held at the Christchurch Town Hall between Monday 14 December and Friday 18 December.
Capping off a unique year, in which Covid-19 caused cancellations and disrupted lectures, a record total of almost 3000 UC students will take part in the week’s events.
