The Gophers wrestling team went 2-0 in a tri-meet against No. 18 Purdue and host Rutgers, securing the second victory when heavyweight Gable Steveson s second technical fall of the day rallied the Gophers to a 21-18 victory over the 17th-ranked Scarlet Knights on Sunday in Piscataway, N.J.
Steveson was one of five Gophers to go 2-0 on the day, including sophomore Patrick McKee and senior Owen Webster. Ranked ninth in the country at 125 pounds, McKee upset No. 6 Devin Schroder of Purdue 5-4, as Minnesota won the first eight decisions in a 32-4 victory. He followed that with a pin of No. 15 Nic Aguilar of Rutgers. At 184 pounds, Webster upset No. 10 Max Lyon of the Boilermakers and No. 15 John Poznanski of the Scarlet Knights.

“I know everybody wanted it,” Rutgers coach Scott Goodale said, “and that’s what they got.”
The Scarlet Knights got swept by Minnesota and Purdue, but not because of a lack of effort by Turley. The sophomore 174-pounder went 2-0 on the day, including a rousing technical fall over the Golden Gophers’ Jake Allar, who was nationally ranked by some services entering the match.
Turley was already moving into the lineup temporarily after struggling starter Joe Grello entered the concussion protocol after injury defaulting out of an extra bout before Rutgers’ two duals. But now it looks like he could stick around a while.

“[Spencer Lee] is a mean little bastard on the mat. He’s a nice kid, but he’s a mean little bastard on the mat and I love it.”
-Tom Brands
Our Hawkeyes accepted a late night challenge from our northern rivals and ventured beyond the border to face off against the Golden Gophers of Minnesota. The once proud rodent-people knew they faced an uphill battle, but they still dreamed of stealing a few wins. Perhaps the only victories they found, however, were of the moral variety. Alas, the bitter taste of an ass-whoppin will resonate for at least one more year as our Hawkeyes spit roasted them to the score of 35-4.

ANNOUNCERS: Shane Sparks and Jim Gibbons Iowa opened up their 2021 season with a dominant win over Nebraska and if the transitive property applies to wrestling (it does not), then they should be in store for another easy win tonight. Iowa beat Nebraska 31-6 and Nebraska beat Minnesota 22-14 a few weeks ago. No, the reason Iowa is heavily favored to make it seven straight dual meet wins over Minnesota has less to do with the transitive property and more to do with the fact that they simply have better wrestlers at most weights. That said, even if the outcome of the dual meet is unlikely to be in doubt for very long, there are still a few intriguing matches to check out. 285 and 157 both feature Top 10 showdowns, with #1 Gable Steveson taking on #3 Tony Cassioppi at 285 and #6 Brayton Lee and #7 Kaleb Young tussling at 157. Steveson beat Cassioppi in each of their meetings last year, 7-5 at the dual meet and 9-4 a few weeks later at the Big Ten Tournament. Ton
