In the midst of the ongoing wave of infections, Singapore has been witnessing a significant increase in COVID-19 fatalities over the past month. The city-state reported 54 deaths in April alone, nearly double the total number recorded in the first quarter, according to the latest data from Singapore's health ministry.
The news has raised alarm bells in the country where the Covid-19 pandemic originated in late 2019 and has witnessed some of the harshest Covid control protocols, with the healthcare system coming under severe strain.
The active cases now comprise 0.01 per cent of the total infections, while the national COVID-19 recovery rate has been recorded at 98.80 per cent, according to the health ministry website
