thank you so much for being with me. this ruling by a federal judge in texas on daca halting new applications, talk to me about the impact that their has on the millions of daca recipient living that protection currently whose lives continue to hang in the balance in this country. thank you so much for having me. for a lot of undocumented immigrants in this country, the reality is that it s almost as if the administration hasn t changed. are you seeing lives again being thrust into chaos, and utter uncertainty by this new ruling by a district judge in texas overturning daca again. you know, one of the more one more time as republicans have tried to repeal this policy created by president obama. following this rule biden pushed for congress to pass the american dream and promise act. how do you see this going do you think they are feeling a sense of urgency around this? i think the newest ruling by
obama-era initiative that allowed more than 700,000 young people known as dreamers to avoid deportation. joining us is jonathan alter, columnist for the daily beast and msnbc political analyst. michael thomasski, special correspondent for the daily beast and the president of the center for american progress. she was hillary clinton s policy director during the 2008 presidential campaign. welcome to all of you. thank you for being with us. not just on a friday night, but a holiday friday night. there s a lot to deal with here. nira, let s start with this. the daca decision, things are not going the president s way in terms of daca. this judge put out a long report in which he agreed that the obama administration may not have had the authority to implement daca, but he did not agree to suspend this, as was requested. absolutely. i think the news here really is that the white house has really
tried to use immigration issues across the board as part of really a campaign strategy. i think they saw overturning daca at this point in time, a judge overturning daca as an opportunity to make this another issue in the campaign, just like they tried to have their failed family separation policy as something that was helping them. and honestly, i think the federal judge has really taken that away from them. despite the fact that they re running the gop is running basically anti-immigrant ads everywhere, i think that is going to fail when a fuel like this is taken away from them. jonathan action of the assembled crowd you and i are old enough to remember when nafta came to be, before that the free trade agreement with canada, the fact that that came of the auto pact between canada and the united states, which was a very active decision to create assembly in canada for american company cars at the time.
according to a post report, john kelly s new guidelines will be giving federal authorities more power to aggressively detain and deport illegal immigrants at the border including hiring thousands of additional agents, expand the corral of those considered priority for deportation. speeding up deportation hearings and getting local law enforcement to help make arrests. is this new direction the right direction? it s clearly what donald trump promised on the campaign trail. i have promised he would get tougher than the previous administration. these memos if they are released, it s my understanding they will do the things you mentioned. but what s interesting is way it s not doing, and what we don t have any idea that will come down the pike. for instance, the daca recipients, the children of
illegal immigrants who were brought here when they were young, and president obama issued an order to protect. we have no evidence they will be subject to this deportation. it looks like donald trump will keep that in place. he says he will deal with that with heart. you see the people around him like steve bannon hop ran breitbart before. they wanted the presidential candidate to pledge whenr they would remove daca. and it doesn t seem the president is going there now. arthel: he said i have a heart, i have children and grandchildren. he says this is a tough one. he interest made it he would be taking care of the children. i think there is something interesting. we can t read to much into it.
