The first missionary settlement was established in Genadendal in 1738, after Georg Schmidt settled in the area named Baviaanskloof. The town was renamed Genadendal in 1806. South Africaâs first teaching college was also established in this historic town in the Overberg in 1838. Now Genadendal boasts being the first town in the Overberg to have hosted the opening of the Western Cape Provincial Parliament.
The village of Genadendal was a hive of activity on Wednesday 17 February, when Premier Alan Winde along with members of the Provincial Parliament and other dignitaries arrived for the auspicious occasion held at Emil Weder Secondary School.
