With limited travel opportunities and the fear of lockdowns and quarantine, many people have chosen to take their well-earned breaks closer to home. People have travelled, often long distances, for centuries; but the concept of travel as a leisure activity is a relatively new one. Paid annual leave - as we know it - was not generally available to workers in Australia until the late 1930s onwards. From the mid-nineteenth century however, settlers did start to travel to neighbouring areas for the purpose of relaxation rather than work, and the introduction of railways opened up new opportunities to travel further, and more quickly.
