15-month-old baby had to be rescued by a coast guard helicopter after floodwaters surrounded their home. officials say there have been so many rescues like these, they ve lost count. south carolina s governor is warning people not to let down their guard as waters recede. this is not over. just because the rain stops does not mean that we are out of the woods. we very much still have a vulnerable situation that s out there. i m still going to ask citizens to please stay inside. the greatest danger is south of columbia where as much as two feet of rain has fallen since friday. several area dams are overflowing or giving way. we have probably about ten dams that broke in lexington county yesterday. reporter: this this afternoon a cnn crew guard helicopter flew over overcreek dam shortly after it breached. warnings of the beach sent reporters and emergency crews rushing to get out of the water s potential path. meanwhile some 1300 national
south carolina. what s the latest, boris? reporter: wolf, we ve been tracking the developments on that dam breach you mentioned just a few moments ago. it is the overcreek dam, and it is in columbia, just one of at least nine dams that have breached over the past few days because of these flood waters. we re being told residents are being evacuated to a nearby high school. and officials are keeping an eye on it. that columbia is about 52 miles west of where we are now. this is the town of manning, south carolina. it s a relatively small town, but as i get out of the way you can see it has been pounded by these flood waters. behind me is highway 301. and you can t see how far the water goes here, at least a mile of flooding here. it is surrounded by businesses. we have a convenience store, a church, several restaurants nearby. one of them was helping to feed the national guard. but most of these businesses are flooded, dozens of cars are submerged, and tonight the town of manning is b
a sense of security. but they expect those waters to grow again. the situation up here, a number of small dams and reservoirs is causing this domino effect, putting pressure on the next dam, that one bringing more pressure on the next one and so on. right now, forest lake dam has not, in fact, breached, but is a very main area of concern, and they re ordering mandatory evacuations of that area right now. okay, sarah, but what about the other dam? overcreek dam? that one has been breached? overcreek, confirmed, has been breached. that water is rushing downstream and will end up in the forest lake area. that s the concern, a domino effect, going downstream. so the overcreek dam, being evacuated right now. the forest acres neighborhood, also being evacuated. sarah dallof on the scene
26,000 families are without power tonight in south carolina, jake. all right. boris sanchez, thank you so much. joining me on the phone tom barry, thanks for joining me. we know that there are evacuations near the overcreek dam. what can you tell us about this breach? what we have is a system of smaller lakes as part of the gills creek watershed in the arcadia lakes area of rich land county. and what happens is one lake feeds into another, feeds into another, feeds into another. so we know that there have been dam failures at the upper rocky creek dam. now, lower than that in rockford lakes and forest lake, they re being overtopped. and we are concerned about breaching for those dams as well. so there s continual flooding that is going on as was mentioned in the report and was mentioned in the governor, we re not out of this by any stretch
a dam has breached. these are pictures out of one of the areas hardest hit. i have nick valencia, who is en route to the scene. what do we know about the dam and the area around it? reporter: awful news, exactly the type of situation that local officials and state officials were concerned about. people thought there was relief. the rain had eased up. the intensity had been e lowered. now we re seeing these reports of overcreek dam, a breach within the last hour. this is right about an neighborhood over the weekend that was among the hardest hit. we saw these striking images over the weekend when we got here perhaps the worst damage we have seen throughout the state. now this news, it s just awful that more hard hit areas.
