American Rescue Plan is an opportunity to chart a bold pandemic recovery

Andy Schor, Mayor of Lansing View Comments As a group of bipartisan mayors representing Michigan’s core urban cities, we’re hopeful about our communities’ ability to emerge from the COVID-19 pandemic with a strong recovery. The recently approved American Rescue Plan Act (ARPA) is fuel for our optimism. The past year has been tremendously difficult for everyone, and Michigan communities were no exception. Our cities struggled to keep essential services running. However, the grit and determination of our emergency personnel, public works employees, and city hall staff enabled us to persevere for our residents. Many of our businesses closed. Some have reopened while others have not. Our residents suffered food and financial insecurity. Our youth did their best to use technology and remote learning for their education without direct in-person contact with their teachers or peers. Most tragically, many of us had loved ones who died alone without family or friends at their beds

Gov Tony Evers calls special session to expand BadgerCare Plus

MIDDLETON - Democratic Gov. Tony Evers latest effort to entice Republican lawmakers to back his plan to expand a health insurance program failed Wednesday hours after he announced it. Evers tried to attract support from Republicans who control the Legislature by linking his proposal to $1 billion in funding for efforts they support.  Republican leaders swiftly rejected Evers idea, just as they thwarted his past efforts to draw additional federal aid by making BadgerCare Plus available to about 100,000 more Wisconsinites. Evers  plan would net Wisconsin $1.6 billion over two years.   Evers had hoped to turn up the pressure by calling a special session on a bill that would put $1 billion toward more than 50 projects, including ones that would put $200 million toward expanding broadband, $100 million toward replacing lead pipes and $100 million toward local roads and bridges.
