He will be promoted to captain, and he will be named the first superintendent of the United States Naval Academy in annapolis. He is the founder in many ways of that school. In 1847 he will resign from that post so he can serve actively in the mexican war, which again he does with distinction, gaining the attention of flag officer matthew galbreith perry.
